Each year, Orientation & Family Programs sends about 24 Spartan Orientation Staff and the central office staff to the Southern Regional Orientation Workshop (SROW), which was held on the campuses of Florida State University and Tallahassee Community College in March 2007. Roughly 1,800 orientation leaders from over 75 colleges and universities across the Southeastern United States attended. During the workshop, the leaders gathered ideas for ways to improve orientation programs as well as gained tips for enhancing their orientation skills. Participating SOS members returned to UNCG with valuable and creative information to integrate into our Spartan Orientation, Advising & Registration program (SOAR).

Each school presents a roll call and takes part in numerous competitions such as song/skit, banner, and t-shirt design. Other activities include break-out programs presented by other orientation leaders, a high energy sticker swap, and a time for students to trade t-shirts with those from different schools.

Weekend Highlights: Staff Recognition

  • Orientation & Family Programs Graduate Assistant and Graduate Intern, Carrie Whiteside and Erin Fox, won 1st place in the Graduate Student Case Study Competition. They also received 3rd place for the Outstanding Education Program for Graduates/Professional.
  • SOS leaders Jessalyn Smith (Parent/Family Captain), Jakime Ellison (Performance Chair) and Patrick Darab (Recruitment Chair) won 3rd place for the Outstanding Education Program for Undergraduates by Undergraduates.
  • Orientation & Family Programs took home 1st place in the t-shirt design competition. The t-shirt was chosen as best design from a group of 30 designs and was proudly sported by the staff during Roll Call.
