Spartan Orientation Staff Leadership Positions
- What is an SOS?
- SOS stands for Spartan Orientation Staff. Each year, Orientation & Family Programs employs 24 SOS to provide guidance for freshmen, transfer and adult students as they enter college and begin their transition to The University of North Carolina at Greensboro.
- Each SOS attends training programs during the spring semester and completes two weeks of intensive training during May. In March, all SOS are also required to attend the Southern Regional Orientation Workshop (SROW), where they learn new strategies for orientation leaders as well as best practices from colleges and universities across the southeast United States.
- Each SOS is under contract with the Orientation & Family Programs from January of the current year until January of the following year. SOS may work up to two years consecutively with Orientation & Family Programs as a returner SOS, Chair, Parent/Family Assistant or Captain and can continue a third year if they are selected to move into the leadership role of Captain.
- Three SOS are selected to serve in chairperson roles: Performance Chair, Recruitment Chair and Teambuilding Chair. Two SOS are selected to serve as Family Program Assistants.
- What is a Captain?
- A captain is a second-year or third-year SOS who has exhibited exemplary skills as an SOS; there are three captains on the SOS staff each year. There are two Student Program Captains and one Family Program Captain.
- Captains are selected through a review process by Orientation & Family Programs staff. They are an essential part of the SOS team and directly supervise the SOS during the spring semester meetings and SOAR. Captains also assist during May training through unique programs while providing guidance to new SOS. Captains are role models who work to keep the SOS organized, on-time, and in the right place when SOAR begins. Captains also work five hours weekly in Orientation & Family Programs in order to train for the position of SOC the following year.
- What is an SOC?
- SOC stands for Spartan Orientation Coordinator.
- Once a captain finishes his/her summer with the SOS during SOAR, they are promoted to SOCs.
- SOCs directly supervise captains and SOS.
- SOCs are responsible for supervising and coordinating various Orientation & Family Programs events including: The Chancellor’s New Student Convocation, SOS Recruitment, and Family Weekend events.
- SOCs work 20 hours per week in Orientation & Family Programs office.
