UNCG's advising and registration period for the spring 2007 semester is Wednesday, October 17 through Friday, November 16. During this time, all students are expected to meet with their assigned academic advisor or advising center to discuss their academic progress, plan their spring schedule, and obtain their advising code to register.
Students will receive an email from the University Registrar's Office in early October informing them of their registration time frame and reminding them to contact their advisor or advising center. Contact should be made at least two weeks prior to their registration window to set up an advising appointment. Many advising centers will contact their students to invite them to schedule an appointment. Students can look up their advisor assignment in UNCGenie by logging in to the secure area and selecting "Student Services and Financial Aid," "Registration," and "Look Up Advisor."
Encourage your student to be prepared for the advising appointment. Students should preview the online spring course schedule in UNCGenie to find out when classes they wish to take will be offered. Students also need to review the requirements for their major using the UNCG Undergraduate Bulletin and their online degree evaluation in UNCGenie to determine which courses they will need. Students must print their degree evaluation and take it with them to their advising appointment.
This is a busy time for both students and advisors, so encourage your student to arrive early for their advising appointment with a list of courses they would like to take, as well as a list of alternate sections and times for these courses to ensure flexibility in the scheduling process. Students should also take time before the advising appointment to compile a list of questions they may have for their advisor to ensure they get the information they need.
Each student is assigned a new advising code each semester that they must obtain from their academic advisor or advising center. Students need to write their advising code down and keep it in a safe place. If the code is lost or forgotten before they have registered, they must go back to their advisor for the code. Each student is assigned a registration time frame during which they can register for classes. This window of time is based on earned hours. Students are highly encouraged to register as soon as their window opens because some classes fill quickly.
If your student has any questions about the advising and registration process, he or she may contact his or her advisor or advising center. The student may also reach Student Academic Services at (336)334-5730 or by visiting their website at http://web.uncg.edu/adv/.

Each year, the UNCG Police Department publishes the Campus Safety Guide for the members of the University community. This electronic publication can be found at http://police.uncg.edu under the link "Clery Report." The report provides a summary of police and safety services that the University provides to its faculty, staff, and students. It also highlights many of the safety related laws, policies, rules, and regulations that the community should know.
One of the topics covered in the Campus Safety Guide is crime statistics. The crime statistics listed in the guide are for the previous three calendar years. The statistics are presented in a format that is required by Federal law. While the intent of the Federal law was to allow current and prospective students to compare criminal activity among Universities, the Police Department cautions that many factors affect the statistics. Major Jamie Herring, the Assistant Chief of the UNCG Police explained, "The student population, the geographic location of the campus, and the level of enforcement of the individual university police departments can have a great impact on crime statistics."
The UNCG Police Department strives to make the campus community a safe place to learn, live, and work. They invite you to use the Campus Safety Guide as a tool to help make that goal a reality. If you have questions about the guide or any other police related matters, feel free to contact the UNCG Police at (336) 334-5963.

Does the thought of taking your child to an art museum produce a level of anxiety similar to major dental work? Fortunately for your child, you don't need to wait until they're in graduate school to share this unique cultural experience. Family Days at museums are an ideal time to explore art with your child. Sure, you won't be able to touch the art, but you will likely have the messy experience of creating your own, taking a kid-friendly tour, watching a musical performance, or even listening to a storyteller.
The Weatherspoon Art Museum at UNCG hosts two Family Days each year (Oct 20, 2007 and April 12, 2008). These free community events are geared toward children ages 2 to 12 years, though all ages are welcome. On October 20, visitors will be able to tour the Weatherspoon's newest exhibition of works by minimalist artist Sol LeWitt along with a video installation by Janine Antoni and modernist works from the museum's permanent collection from 1:00-4:00pm. Art activities, refreshments, music, and a scavenger hunt will make for a fun-filled afternoon for children and adults alike.
The Weatherspoon Art Museum at The University of North Carolina at Greensboro is located on the corner of Spring Garden and Tate Streets. Free visitor parking is available directly behind the museum. For more information and directions, please visit http://weatherspoon.uncg.edu or call 336.334.5770.
