To better prepare for threats to the campus, The University of North Carolina at Greensboro conducted an Active Shooter Live Exercise on its campus on Monday, January 7, 2008. The University has been planning the exercise for nearly a year after the first Virginia Tech incident in August 2006, when an escaped inmate killed a sheriff's deputy and a security guard and was captured on the campus. UNCG has been involved in emergency preparedness since 1999.The University's Emergency Operations Plan (EOP) was developed at that time. The EOP identifies a number of staff as emergency responders and guides the actions of the University through an emergency.

The January 7 scenario was the first full-scale exercise the University has conducted and was the largest such scenario conducted by a university in the U.S. (according to research done by EnviroSafe). A live exercise uses role players with a simulated incident that occurs in real time and requires an actual reaction from emergency responders. Equipment and human resources are activated and deployed as if the emergency is really happening. UNCG has carried out various table top exercises over the past several years, including scenarios for pandemic flu, hurricane, tornado, train derailment, and hazardous material spill. Table top exercises involve simulated emergencies that are presented to emergency responders. The responders must then develop response activities based on the circumstances presented within a condensed time frame.

In addition to UNCG, the Active Shooter exercise involved other public safety agencies including the Greensboro Police Department, the Guilford County Sheriff's Office, Greensboro Fire Department, Guilford County EMS, Guilford County Emergency Management, the FBI, and the American Red Cross. The University was assisted in the planning and implementation of the exercise by EnviroSafe Consulting of Graham.

The exercise scenario was based on a domestic violence situation that became a workplace violence incident. In the scenario, a student employee of the Office of Housing and Residence Life had taken out a restraining order against her old boyfriend. The boyfriend and his brother came to campus to get revenge against her and her fellow employees that helped her get the order. The initial shooting incident ended when UNCG Police Officers located and killed the shooter. The brother then held students in a mock tennis class and several University employees hostage in the Athletic Turf Maintenance Building. After a brief standoff, the hostage taker forced action on the part of the officers by shooting a hostage. Members of the UNCG Police, the Guilford County Sheriff's Department, and the Greensboro Police Department then entered the building killing the hostage taker.

The scenario included participation by 120 law enforcement officers, 45 Fire and EMS employees, 25 Red Cross workers, 85 volunteer role players, and about 80 University Staff members who responded to different aspects of the scenario. Additionally, members of the media played a large role in the scenario as well as provided pre and post event coverage. Approximately 150 observers watched the exercise unfold from different vantage points around campus. The scenario occurred while a limited number of students were on campus to allow for a safer training exercise.

Academic diversity is a good thing, but it can be overwhelming for students who are trying to decide which one of UNCG's 100+ areas of study is best for them. Undecided students are in very good company; there are approximately 600 students at UNCG this spring who are undecided on their major.

This is where Major Matters can help! Major Matters, a major and minor fair, seeks to simplify the major selection process for students by bringing together academic departments, Career Services, and the University Registrar's Office in one room at one time. Forty different departments will have representatives to answer the kinds of questions students have when they consider changing majors:

  • What courses are required for this major?
  • What are the admission and graduation requirements?
  • Is there a student club or organization connected with this major?
  • What career options will I have?

Major Matters is scheduled for Tuesday, February 12, from 11:30am-2:30pm in the EUC Cone Ballroom. This is a free event and no registration is required. Refreshments will be available. Please encourage your student to attend if he or she has questions about choosing a major!

Join UNCG Athletics in "Think Pink" on Saturday, February 9. UNCG Women's Basketball Team will participate in the Women's Basketball Coaches Association's (WBCA) unified effort to assist in raising breast cancer awareness on the court, across campuses, in communities, and beyond. "Think Pink" began in 2007 as an initiative to raise breast cancer awareness in women's basketball, on campuses and in communities. In 2007, more than 120 schools unified for this effort and helped make the inaugural year a success. The WBCA's "Think Pink" week for 2008 will be held February 8-17. At games this week, pink will be a major theme from pink uniforms to officials blowing pink whistles. Come out and join UNCG's Women Spartans as they "Think Pink" and help to raise breast cancer awareness!

Over half of the students enrolled at UNCG are taking advantage of the financial aid opportunities available to help pay for the cost of a college education. However, many students think that they will never qualify for financial assistance, so they do not even bother applying. There are many opportunities for financial aid available to everyone, and we want to help you and your student take advantage of them! Whether you currently have financial aid or are wondering if you would even qualify, Financial Aid Awareness Week may help provide some answers to your questions!

The UNCG Financial Aid Office will have information tables set up in the Elliott University Center and the Cafeteria beginning February 11th where Financial Aid Office staff members will be available to answer your financial aid questions. Stop by our information tables in the EUC on February 11th and 12th from 11am-1pm. We will be available in the Cafeteria on February 13th and 14th from 11am-1pm as well.

In addition to the information available during Financial Aid Awareness Week, students may also receive assistance in filing their FAFSA on FAFSA Day. This will be held on Saturday, February 9th, 2008 throughout the state. Please visit College Foundation of North Carolina at http://www.cfnc.org for information on locations of the event, required documentation, and registration for FAFSA day.

Students may begin filing their FAFSA (http://www.fafsa.ed.gov) for the 2008-2009 school year right now! Students must file a FAFSA each school year they are planning to receive financial aid, even if your aid consists only of student loans. Remember: the FAFSA priority deadline for UNCG is March 1, 2008!

Helpful Hints in Filing Your FAFSA:
  • File your FAFSA in time for the federal processor to receive it by March 1.
  • Be sure that you list UNCG on the FAFSA. UNCG's federal school code is 002976. The Financial Aid Office cannot award aid to you unless you list UNCG as a school to receive your information.
  • Be sure your name and student ID number are on every document submitted to Financial Aid on your behalf.
  • Be sure that UNCG has your current address and e-mail address information.
  • Respond to requests for information promptly
